Bikrant Das Sharma, a freshman majoring in computer science, with a minor in computational and applied mathematics, has won first place in the Mathematics and Computer Sciences Undergraduate Division at the Sigma Xi Annual Meeting and Student Research Conference.
Das Sharma’s project, one of 278 in his category, is titled “Machine Learning Model to Predict and Reduce Carbon Dioxide Emissions.” Using nine years of data from the World Bank Group, his model suggested a correlation between CO2 emissions and gross domestic product.
Started three years ago, the project was undertaken by Das Sharma independently of his classes at Rice. His adviser is Prasanta Behera, senior vice president of engineering and co-founder of ScoreData.
The conference was held virtually Nov. 5-8. Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society, is a non-profit organization for scientists and engineers founded in 1886 at Cornell University. It has nearly 100,000 members in more than 500 chapters in North America.
