Karen North, Alief ISD, teaches a C++ and Scheme course in parallel for 11th and 12th graders without prior computing:
``Only one reserved word in Scheme so far:
define
. And everyday there are more keywords in C++:
#include
this and #include
that.''
``Today we did constants and variables in C++. In Scheme we have learned about algebraic computing and are now reusing definitions. ... I have absolutely no doubt now that Scheme is the way to go.''
Michael Hunt, Awty School, teaches Pascal to 11th and 12th graders and Scheme to 9th graders:
``I will definitely be teaching Scheme to the ninth graders [again] next year. In fact, I am now finding it utter drudgery to teach my 11th and 12th graders Pascal. For two years ... [of] teaching Pascal, I have had a sense of frustration, having to spend so much time and effort on the syntax of the programming language, debugging, etc. Scheme is a complete and welcomed paradigm shift that shines a light brightly on the source of my frustration and provides a way to alleviate it!''
