About forty-five people have received their PhD since the Rice Computer Science Department split off from the Math Science Department. Many people have stayed on in the department for one to two years as postdocs. Recent Rice graduates have accepted faculty positions at University of California at Santa Cruz, University of Utah, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Michigan Tech and Caltech, along with research positions at Carnege-Mellon University, Stanford, University of St. Louis, Ecole des Mines, Los Alamos, and industry positions at IBM, Tera, and Sun Microsystems.
